Saber Saharkhiz

Saber Saharkhiz is a Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biologist (currently, a Neuroscience PhD candidate at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa) using genes 🧬, microscopy 🔬, computer science 💻, and math 📊 to understand and impact neurodevelopmental disorder 🧠.

📍Getting Started in Math:
I was a good kid and also a bit of an oddball, so I did not always fit in! I loved games and playing sports like football, tennis and swimming, but also loved Math Olympiad. I earned my Mathematics & Physics high school Diploma. I was encouraged to become a doctor and went on to get my college degree in Biology.

📍Academic Journey:
I completed my veterinary medicine-DVM training with a focus on image-based profiling in Pharmacology and Physiology in Tehran, August 2021, inspired by my prior exposure to medical research. Shortly after, I joined a lab at Département de pharmacologie-physiologie, Faculté de médecine, Université de Sherbrooke in Quebec, where I applied Machine Learning to monitor Multiple Sclerosis and gained extensive experience in advanced Programming and Biostatistics. This experience fueled my passion for research, which led me to pursue a graduate program in Neuroscience at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. There, I have been focusing on leveraging deep learning and computational techniques in Microscopy and Cell and Developmental Biology to study nerve cord development.

Throughout my research career, I have focused on addressing medical challenges using Machine Learning, Computational methods, and key experimental wet-lab techniques. My training has enabled me to formulate questions in animal models that are transferable to human health.

Remember: Progress in biology is highly correlated with how fast and efficient we can do experiments and analyses. More AI please!🤖🧑‍💻
